Cathy Zhang (Aizenberg Group) points out that the Morpho butterfly's beautiful blue color is not due to pigments (molecules that absorb certain wavelengths of light), but rather it's caused by almost periodically patterned nanoscale "Christmas tree" structures made of transparent materials.
